Music of declining fortune. In his reactionary 1918 novel The Magnificent Ambersons, Booth Tarkington described urban growth in quasi-organic terms, recognizable to anyone who has watched so-called "development" from the sidelines: "The town was growing and changing as it had never changed before. It was heaving up in the middle incredibly; it was spreading incredibly; and as it heaved and spread, it befouled itself and darkened its sky."
